World War II day in Year 6.
Dressed in our finest 1940s inspired gear, the day began with children bringing in an amazing range of World War II artefacts from home including a range of documents, medals, weapons and letters and even a walking cane which concealed a single shot pistol! They spoke wonderfully and with real passion about their items and we learned an awful lot from them.
Next up was the tea party, where children sampled a range of sweet and savoury wartime recipes including Spam hash, curried carrots, pear crumble and unbaked chocolate cake. They ranged them in terms of appearance, smell and finally taste to give an overall score. While initially worried about the ingredients, most children were pleasantly surprised by the taste and flavour despite how basic the ingredients were.
Finally, in the afternoon, there was an art session based on the famous photograph “St Paul’s Survives” by Herbert Mason. Using chalk and card to create silhouettes, children were able to recreate their own version of a nighttime sky during the Blitz. The results are pretty spectacular as you can see from the stack below.
A fantastic day for sure!
